POSTCULTURE PRESENT A SELECTION OF THEIR FAVOURITE BASEMENT TAPE JAMS — CAPTURED BETWEEN 2016-2022 — DIGITAL RELEASE APRIL 21ST "Amazing hyperbolic quote goes here" |
POSTCULTURE have trawled through an extensive archive of rehearsal tapes to present a collection of their favourite improvisations. AVADANCE features nine jams captured between 2016 and 2022 with a digital bonus track (available at Bandcamp) compiling even earlier recordings alongside a host of familiar voices.
"There's a nice unity to these jams" explains Tom. "We find ourselves regularly drawn to the 125bpm mark. Somewhere between house and garage, Matt christened it the Extension Vibe." "A rehearsal space is rarely used simply for reheasal. From our first jam together I've had some form of recorder running. Up until 2020 this was likely a four-track Zoom H4N or H5. Placed behind the drumkit, stereo microphones record the room, with one direct input from the bass effects, one from the mixing desk. Generally this would be a mono mix of my guitar and laptop outputs but could include various keyboards, synths or vocals depending on guests. Following sessions, I make quick mixes of work-in-progress songs or anything else of interest, such as improvs." "Unlike studio recording, once captured, I don't retain any of the individual instrument stems. Thus the basement tapes presented here feature the mix done at time of creation, mastered in 2022. This is the closest we've come yet to releasing a live Postculture album." So is this a live album? "Not quite! With the exception of Lockdown II, [video opposite] all the selections have been edited down from longer improvisations. Making this compilation we further reduced the length of some - considerably in the case of Housebound, Alan's Mantra and Triage - adding an assembly of voices from multiple rehearsals to the Nadine's Mantra skit, some crowd noise from a Wakefield Unity Works gig to Q Spregium Storn, and a newly assembled James Mason sample to Updates Install." In an age of automation and quantization, where pop and dance genres regurgitate stock sounding generic beats, AVADANCE is a raw reminder of what three musicians in a room sound like; when the red light says 'record' and there's a blank canvas waiting to be filled with music.
